With this question in mind, we entered the damp forest.
In a forest with a lot of water flow, there is always a smell of damp plants. At first, it was the smell of soil and leaves. Later, under the influence of moisture, it turned into a special flavour.
This fragrance is neither flowers nor leaves—it’s the breath of life respiring in the dampness. Water droplets clinging to fern fronds, moss spreading like a dark green carpet across tree trunks—all are part of this olfactory experience. Perhaps this is the most primal scent of life.
When ancient creatures first crawled from the ocean onto land, this same damp aroma must have surrounded them. Now, humans have built their nests, masking primal scents with something else. Yet whenever rain soaks the earth and water seeps into forgotten corners, those buried scent memories quietly reawaken.
Water complicates scent, just as it complicates life itself.
